The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of July 18, 2011

CONTRACT RATIFICATION - SUMMARY AND MEETINGS

Contract articles have been tentatively agreed to between the Association's bargaining team and the College. They are now being presented to all CSEA members for ratification. Voting will be conducted on Wednesday, July 27; Thursday, July 28; and Friday, July 29 at times and locations to be determined. Meetings to discuss the tentative contract will be held on Thursday, July 21, from 2:30 - 4:30, and Friday, July 22, from 10:30 - 12:30 in locations to be determined.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE SERVICE

CSEA is seeking faculty members to serve on two college-level committees: one to serve on the S2S Communications Committee and one to serve on the Classroom Safety Committee. Such service counts as College Service in annual appraisals and applications for promotion and/or tenure. If you are interested in serving on either of these committees, contact Darrell Minor by email, or at x5310.

ADDITIONAL COMMITTEES BEING FORMED

All full-time faculty should have received an email, which included an attached letter from Dr. Jack Cooley, this past week. The letter included a brief summary of a number of academic college committees that are being formed in an effort to provide for greater faculty leadership on academic matters, and to encourage greater levels of collaboration between faculty and the academic administration as well as between existing committees in the two divisions. CSEA strongly encourages you to consider volunteering for these important committees. Contact Betty Tatum at btatum@cscc.edu if you are interested in serving on one of these academic committees.

SEPARATION/RETIREMENT INCENTIVE

If the proposed contract is ratified, then full-time faculty who intend to participate in the college’s voluntary cash separation incentive must notify the college by August 31. The incentive provides for a faculty member to receive a full year’s salary (up to $75,000) to separate from the college—that is, to resign your full-time position and give up tenure within 6 months of notifying the college of your intent to participate.

ANNUAL APPRAISALS

Many faculty are meeting with their department chairs to review annual appraisals and discuss goals for the coming academic year. We offer the reminder that you have the right to file an addendum to your annual appraisal if you believe that any comments by a department chair are inaccurate.

There is no requirement that you sign your annual appraisal at the time you meet with your department chair. You have a reasonable time to write a statement to correct the record and to attach it to your annual appraisal before signing off on it.

Annual appraisals become important records that are reviewed by promotion and tenure committees. It is essential that any inaccuracies in a department chair’s appraisal be addressed in some form so that public records and applications for promotion or tenure provide a balanced assessment of a faculty member’s work.
